A popular local clothing retailer has filed for bankruptcy protection.

Bedford County-based American Outfitters, a regional clothing retailer, has filed for protection from creditors under federal bankruptcy regulations. The company said it was forced to seek Chapter 11 protection to maintain business and employees at its unprofitable stores. American Outfitters, which filed for bankruptcy at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Pittsburgh, said in a statement that it plans to reorganize and could close some locations in an effort to return the business to profitability.

Details about the company's finances were not immediately available. American Outfitters has stores in Altoona, Bedford, Richland Township, Somerset, DuBois, State College and Hagerstown, Maryland.
