La Russa says Big Mac should be in the Hall
If it were up to Tony La Russa, Mark McGwire would be in the Hall of Fame.
In an interview with The Associated Press, the St. Louis
Cardinals manager says he's believed in McGwire from day one and he still believes in him.
McGwire is appearing on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time and an AP survey of 125 baseball writers, about 20 percent of the total, shows that only one in four who gave an opinion plan to vote for Big Mac.
La Russa says "it would be two in five then. I'd make it two in five." He says "I can't answer for anybody else, what priorities they give and how they weigh stuff. I know what personal opinion is, and that's the way it stays."
McGwire was a 12 time All-Star and is seventh on the career home run list with 583. But last year, former teammate Jose Canseco accused McGwire of using steroids. In March of 2005, McGwire evaded questions during a congressional hearing.
La Russa managed McGwire from 1986-1995 with Oakland, then
from 1997-2001 with the Cardinals.
